What Tarot Is and What It Isn't

Tarot is a tool of divination meant to give clarity to the person being read for.

What It Is...A Tool of Divination

Tarot reading is the centuries-old practice of using a 78-card deck as a tool of divination—that is, the art or practice of discovering hidden knowledge or unusual insight through divine messages. Tarot card interpretation can be used to answer a multitude of questions by those who have learned and connected with their deck.

Whether you’re reading for yourself or others, the symbolism and stories interwoven with the tarot deck are meant to procure a reaction from the subconscious in order to make connections that might not have been seen otherwise.

What It Is Not

Tells Your Future

Tarot cards do not give the reader the ability to see the future. They are a way to reflect, react, and respond accordingly.

Something You Must Obey

It's important to understand that tarot is not information written in stone. You always have free will and the power to change your approach to life, whether that’s to continue or to diverge from the path you’re currently on. Tarot is meant only for guidance and you should have no fear of consequences if they are not followed.

Based on Religion, Deities, or Superstitions

Often people think that any kind of card reading for the purpose of divination requires believing in and calling on some higher power. Some have even thought it is satanic or based on witchcraft. Not true. It is using your subconscious, your history and any and all deceased relatives, spirit guides, and all beings of light and goodness to help you get your answers.

What To Expect

Meeting Your Tarot Reader

Every reader of tarot does it a bit different. There is no set way to do it in order to be successful. Your reader has spent a lot of time learning the cards in both symbology and meaning. They develop a personal relationship with their cards and the guides who help them. So if you've had a reading before and this one is different, don't worry!  It only matters that it works for you.

First Set Your Intention

When you are having a reading done, it’s important to set an intention first. Your tarot reader will say something like, “I call forth my spirit guides of the purest and highest intention to give me messages of clarity for each question being asked hereafter.” Both you and the tarot reader must always come with sincere intentions and a level of respect for the guidance you’re seeking.

Ask Questions

From that point, ask questions that are both specific and nonspecific. A specific question would be, “Should I move forward with the new job I was just offered?” or “Am I really falling in love?” Nonspecific questions sound more like, "What should I do for a job? or “Tell me about my current relationship.” Often, clarity is needed so the reader will pull out additional cards or might even use a pendulum. A reader is often intuitive as well and will offer their own insight into the cards and your questions and/or situations.
